Calculation purpose and formula
Interpret the result
Use a weekly or monthly period to see whether adding capacity is justified or whether scheduling, changeover, or maintenance is the real constraint.
Worked example
Six printers with 120 available hours each create 720 gross hours. With 480 productive hours and no maintenance, utilization is about 66.667%.
Assumptions and limitations
Productive hours are recorded consistently, including only prints that were intentionally scheduled to make output. A high utilization figure can still hide poor yield, excessive material waste, or low-margin work.
Common planning mistake
Do not count scheduled maintenance twice—remove it from net capacity, then keep blocked or idle time separate for diagnosis.
