What this tool calculates

Follow a weighed scrap batch through the real loss points between the sorting bin and QC-accepted filament.

Formula and method

Each loss is applied sequentially to the mass entering that stage. Usable output = scrap × (1 − sorting loss) × (1 − size-reduction loss) × (1 − extrusion loss) × (1 − QC loss).

When to use it

Use measured stage losses from previous runs to plan how much clean scrap must be collected for a future batch and to see where yield is being lost.

Worked example

A 2 kg scrap batch with 5%, 3%, 8%, and 5% sequential losses yields about 1.61 kg of usable filament: one full 1 kg spool plus roughly 0.61 kg.

Assumptions and limitations

Stage losses are independent mass fractions applied in process order, and rejected material is not immediately rerun in the same calculation. Moisture changes and unweighed material transfers can distort a mass balance. Weigh actual stage outputs when improving your process.

Common mistake

Do not simply add stage percentages and subtract once; later losses act on the smaller mass that remains.
